About me: FREE SUMMER LESSONS/TUTORING

I will be a senior in High School next year, I have been playing viola since I was 8. I am in two orchestras, my school orchestra and the SNHU Community Orchestra. I would really like to make a living out of music. So I've decided to get some more experience for myself by offering lessons for beginning kids (as young as 7) and teens. For those who have already started (intermediate), I'll help you with your chosen work. I am willing to teach kids and teens to play the viola, and to tutor those who would like a little extra help staying on track during the summer. These lessons and tutor sessions are 100% free. The only things you will need:

*IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER:*
- A properly sized viola
I suggest getting the most expensive that you can afford, as price is an indicator of
quality. The better your instrument sounds, the more encouraged you are to practice.
*This suggestion is void if you are renting, as most of the time you can't choose.
- An extra set of strings
Strings wear out with time. If you are renting or buying used, you have no idea how long
those strings have been on the viola. Also, accidents happen. You may decide to attempt
tuning on your own and turn the peg too far, breaking the string. An extra set keeps that
from being a problem. Again, get the best you can afford. However, ask around about
the best brands.
- Extra rosin
People drop rosin all the time. When rosin is dropped, it breaks. It's necessary to play,
so keep a spare in your case.
- Shoulder rest (Optional)
This is not required, but highly suggested. It assists with keeping good posture, which is
a key factor in getting the best sound. It is also very good for learning vibrato, as it
makes holding up the viola easier. DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH A CHIN REST. A
shoulder rest is long and latches on to the bottom of the instrument. The most widely
used brand (which I also use) is Kun. Any kind is fine, but collapsible is suggested as it
fits in the case better.
- Essential Elements For Strings 2000 Book 1
This is the book that I have based my lessons on, since I was taught with it. If you've
heard suggestions of a better book, I would love to check it out and evaluate it myself. I
have other lesson books as well, but those won't be used at home, only for during
lessons if I think it would help.

FOR PARENTS OF CHILD BEGINNERS:
- I have read up a bit on the Suzuki Method. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is a method for teaching very young children to play an instrument effectively. I'm not a certified Suzuki teacher, but there are some things that I think are very good and I would like to implement into my lessons. I suggest that parents be present for each lesson, watching and learning as much about music theory as their child will be. The purpose of this is so that you know exactly what your child should be practicing when they are at home between lessons, and so that if the child is confused, you can give them the same help that I do during lessons.
- Encouragement and parental involvement is the best way to motivate a child learning a new instrument.

FOR TEEN BEGINNERS:
- Watching videos on YouTube of other viola players such as Kim Kashkashian or listening to recordings of viola solos or even quartets may serve as motivation to practice and for improvement.

*IF YOU ARE AN INTERMEDIATE PLAYER SEEKING HELP:*
- Bring Your Viola and supplies
- If you do not already have a shoulder rest, I highly suggest purchasing one.
- I also highly suggest an upgrade in strings if you are still using D'Addario Prelude
- If you have any specific songs you want help on, bring those.
- If you want help on specific skills (Fast notes, bowings, scales, etc.) bring any materials you already have. I may be able to supply more after the first few sessions.
- If you just want to stay on track and want it to be general, bring anything you're interested in playing, and we can discuss what else you might like to try that I can try to acquire.
